Hello Skinner,

I'm flattered you liked my image in Friday's Times. However it is a copyrighted image, by both me and the New York Times. This means that you can't simply copy the file from the server and post it on your blog without permission.

I'd appreciated your taking the file down and deleting it from your server immediately.

That said, a perfectly legal and acceptable way to send readers to an image on the web would be to smply make a link to the article as you have on the right side of the page. You can code it to open in a new window so you don't lose readers. This acts as a bibliographic entry and leaves full control over the image to author and publisher.

I hate to be a crank, but because an image is on the web does not put it in the public domain. Crediting the author does not solve copyright issues.

Thanks for the consideration.

Dear Moloney,

I deleted your image and the credit. I am simply leaving the link.

Skinner,

No, you did not delte the file, It is still visible on the page, though misproportioned, and I can still download the file directly from the URL. DELETE the file from the server or I will pursue legal action.

It was actually the article that I was interested in. Anyway, I tried but couldn't delete the photograph and did not realize that disfiguring it still left it visible. So everything is gone - also the link to the article! I deleted the whole thing! That was the only way to delete the image.

Anyway, obviously this was a mistake and the blog is not making any profit from your image. If anything it was further dissemination of your work.

I regret that you are so upset about this.
